If you're like me, you get about a dozen emails every day trying to sell you a new plugin that promises to completely transform your mixes. It's easy to buy into this hype, thinking that gear is what stands between you and the sound in your head. And while some plugins definitely do make mixing easier and more fun, they'll never make as big if a difference as knowing how to use your tools.
